A Sussex Family: The Tingley's
George Thomas Tingley was born on 8 May 1860 in Lindfield, Sussex. George was the third child of George Tingley and Ellen Day. George’s father died when he was 18 years old and in 1881, George was living with his mother, sister Jane and brother’s Charles and Albert at 2 Petland Gardens, Cuckfield, Sussex. Both George and Albert were working as labourers to help support their widowed mother.
The following year, on 24 June 1882, George married Ellen Eliza Warton in Brighton, Sussex. Both George and Ellen were 22-years-old. Less than 12 months later, their first child was born, George Albert was born on 27 April 1883 in Hayward’s Heath, Sussex. By 1891, they had two more children, Edith Nelly and Frank Charles and were living at 3 The Square, Patcham, Sussex. George was earning his living as a carter; the children were all at school and they had also taken in a boarder.

George and Ellen were still at the same address in 1901, George was working as a carter for a road contractor, as was his son George Albert. Frank Tingley was a carter for a nearby horse farm. Two more children had been born, Kate Selina in 1891 and Frederick Richard in 1893. Kate and Frederick were both still of school age. Edith had left home and was working as a housemaid at the High Croft School in Ore, East Sussex.
George Albert Tingley married on 26 December 1905 in Midhurst, Sussex. His wife, Ada Binstead, was the daughter of Edmund and Elizabeth C Binstead of Midhurst, Sussex. Ada had been working as a kitchen maid in the household of Laura Philcox in Patcham, Sussex in 1901 and most likely she met George Tingley whilst living in Patcham. Edith Nelly Tingley was married in Patcham, Sussex in about June 1908 to Edgar George Woolven. |
Kate Selina Tingley also moved away from home and in 1911 she was working as a parlour-maid for Ann Duckworth of Church road, Hove, Sussex. George and Ellen Tingley just had the two younger boys at home in 1911. They were still living at The Square, Patcham, Sussex but had moved from number 3 to number 10. (this was possibly just a renumbering of the houses though) George was working as a general labourer and the two boys, Frank and Frederick were both farm labourers.
Frank Tingley married two years later on 14 January 1913 in Brighton, Sussex. His wife, Maud Woolven, was the sister of Edith’s husband Edgar Woolven. On 23 October 1932, Frank was sawing wood from a tree in Stanmer Park, Sussex, when a branch from the tree fell pinning him to the ground. Frank suffered a ruptured liver and subsequently died in the Royal Sussex County Hospital. He was 45 years of age.
Kate Selina Tingley also married in 1913, on 11 September in Bromley, Kent. Her husband Henry Whittaker was from Yorkshire. Henry’s mother, Mary Ann Jacques, was the proprietress of the Hotel Alexandra in Hove, Sussex and Kate was working as a chambermaid in the hotel when she met Henry. They had three children, Henry Roland, Ronald Henry and Marjorie Ellen. Joan Katharine Whittaker was born in 1920.
Henry Roland Whittaker was placed into the care of Kate’s sister Ada and her husband, but sadly he died as an infant. Ronald Whittaker was brought up by his aunt Edith and her husband Edgar Woolven. Marjorie went to live with George and Ada Tingley and was like a little sister to their only daughter Kathleen. Sadly, Joan Katharine Whittaker, spent the first ten years or so of her life in a children’s home, before also going to live with Edith and Edgar Woolven. Their mother, unfortunately, was in the position of having to work as a live-in servant. Her husband did not return home after the First World War. He and Kate were divorced and he stayed in France and married a nurse. Many years later, Kate married Arthur James Lusty. They were married on 21 September 1944 in Hammersmith, Middlesex. Arthur died the following year at 55 years of age and Kate died two years later in about December 1947 at the age of 56 years. |
Frederick Richard Tingley entered military service during world war 1 and served with the Royal Sussex Regiment. After the war he married Louie Jane Attrell on 17 January 1920 in Polegate, Sussex and they had two sons, Lawrence George and Frederick Arthur.
George Thomas Tingley died on the 27 March 1935 in Patcham, Sussex at the age of 74 years. Ellen Eliza Tingley died two years later on 22 June 1937 in Patcham, Sussex. She was 77 years old.
