A Sussex Family: The Tingley's
Abednego Warton was born in about 1792 in Sussex and was christened on 12 August 1792 in Balcombe, Sussex. Abednego was the youngest child of John Warton and Ruth Wheeler and had three brothers, James, Meshech and Shadrach and one sister, Jane.
Balcombe is a village in Mid-Sussex, just north of Cuckfield. St Mary’s Parish Church at Balcombe dates back to the 13th century. Abednego married Mary Manwaring on 8 October 1814 in Kemsing, Kent. Abednego and Mary Warton may have lived in the village of Kemsing for a period of time, the village was expanding rapidly in the early 19th century. Bricklayers, carpenters and thatchers were required to help build new houses in the ever-growing village. There would also have been plenty of work for agricultural labourers on the surrounding farms. |
However, by 1817 they were both living in Balcombe, Sussex, where their son William was born. He was christened on 21 December 1817 in Balcombe, Sussex. Another son, named Abednego after his father, was christened on 10 September 1820 in Balcombe, Sussex. Their third son, John Divine Warton was christened in Balcombe, Sussex on 28 March 1824.
Abednego Warton snr. died in July 1825 in Balcombe, Sussex. He was just 33 years old. It is not known what became of his wife Mary or their son William at this time. Abednego Warton jnr married Harriett Hunt on 21 October 1848 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Abednego and Harriet had moved to Streat, Sussex by 1861 and Abednego worked on farms in the local area as an agricultural labourer. They had a family of four sons and five daughters. |
John Divine Warton also married in 1848, a few months earlier, on 2 April, to Ann Marler. John was a dairyman/milkman and he and Ann and their family of eleven children lived in Guildford street, Brighton, Sussex for many years.

Abednego Warton was born in about 1792 in Sussex, was christened on 12 August 1792 in Balcombe, Sussex and died in July 1825 in Balcombe, Sussex at age 33 years. Abednego married Mary Manwaring on 8 October 1814 in Kemsing, Kent. They had three sons: William, Abednego and John Divine.

- Abednego Warton was born in about 1820 in Balcombe, Sussex, was christened on 10 September 1820 in Balcombe, Sussex and died in December quarter 1895 in Lewes, Sussex at age 75 years. Abednego married Harriett Hunt on 21 October 1848 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Harriett was born in about 1825 in East Grinstead, Sussex, was christened on 15 May 1825 in East Grinstead, Sussex and died in December quarter 1900 in Cuckfield district, Sussex at age 75 years. They had nine children: Abednego, Mary Jane, Elizabeth Harriet, William, Sarah, Susannah, Eliza, James and Joseph.
- John Divine Warton was born in about 1824 in Balcombe, Sussex, was christened on 28 March 1824 in Balcombe, Sussex and died in March quarter 1885 in Brighton, Sussex at age 61 years. John married Ann Marler on 2 April 1848 in Brighton, Sussex. Ann was born in about 1824 in London, Middlesex and died in March quarter 1882 in Brighton, Sussex at age 58 years. They had eleven children: Mary Ann, Emily, Caroline Selina, Sarah Harriet, John William, George, Ellen Eliza, William Henry, Henry, Lawrence William and Albert.
