A Sussex Family: The Tingley's
John Divine Warton was born in about 1824 in Balcombe, Sussex. The son of Abednego Warton and Mary Manwaring, John was christened on 28 March 1885 in Balcombe, Sussex.
At the age of 24, John married Ann Marler on 2 April 1848 at St Nicholas Church in Brighton, Sussex. Three years later and John and Ann were living at Scabe's Castle Lodge on Hartington road, Brighton, Sussex with two young daughters, Mary and Emily. John was working for a local milkman. Three more daughters and two sons were born over the next ten years, Caroline Selina, Sarah Harriet, John William, George and Ellen Eliza. The family had moved to 44 Guildford street in Brighton, Sussex. John was now employed as a milkman and had two lodgers who were working for him as labourers. The seven children were all at school. |
Another son was born in about November 1861, William Henry. But sadly, he did not survive and died as an infant. However, three more sons were born over the ensuing years, Henry, Lawrence William, and Albert, and they were all healthy.
Older sister, Emily was married on 20 November 1870. She married Albert Baker, a greengrocer from Brighton, Sussex. Albert later turned his had to dealing in coal and other general goods before eventually working on a farm as a cowman or milkman. Albert and Emily had a family of eleven children. Tragically they lost five children in infancy.

In 1871, John and Ann were still living in Guildford street, Brighton. John was still working at the dairy and eldest son, John William was earning an income as a painter. John William Warton was married on 7 August 1880 at St Peter's Church in Brighton, Sussex to Louisa Knight, the daughter of William Knight and Elizabeth Marler
A year later they were lodging with Frederick Hunt, a fishmonger of 22 Victoria street, Brighton, Sussex. John was employed as a gardener. John and Louisa had five children, however two of them died as infants. Louisa most likely died in childbirth after the birth of their fifth child who did not survive. Life was much the same for John and Ann Warton in 1881, they were still in Guildford street, Brighton, John was still employed as a milkman, his son Henry was working with him and they had two boarders who also helped out on the milk rounds. Ellen was earning an income as a general servant and Lawrence was a greengrocer’s assistant. Albert was still at school, as was their 10-year-old grandson, Ernest Warton, who was living with his grandparents.
Ann Warton died in about March 1882 at the age of 58 years and unfortunately did not see her daughter Ellen marry George Thomas Tingley on 24 June 1882 or Ellen’s sister, Sarah marry carpenter and builder, William Beard in about December 1882. William Beard worked as a sawyer on the railways. William and Sarah had four children. Henry Warton was married two years later in about June 1884, to Annie Linfield. Henry worked in the dairy with his father but later went on to be an egg merchant. William and Annie had five children.
John Divine Warton died in about March 1885 in Brighton, Sussex at the age of 61 years.
