Wooderson's from Hampshire
The Wooderson family were originally from Odiham in the County of Hampshire. The railway reached nearby Basingstoke in 1839, making travel quicker and easier. It was around this time that the Wooderson family moved to the port town of Folkestone in the County of Kent. Folkestone was an important harbour and shipping port for most of the 19th and 20th centuries.
It was in Folkestone, Kent that my husband's great-grandmother, Martha Jane Wooderson, was born in 1878. Martha married Frank Ward in 1897.
Most of my research into the Wooderson family has been done through census records. I was able to obtain a couple of certificates from the General Register Office in England however, which set me on the right path. It took me quite some time to trace the marriage of Martha Jane Wooderson's parents, Henry Wooderson and Emma Elizabeth Symonds. (Mostly because the surname Symonds has had so many variations in the spelling!) Eventually I was able to trace Emma Elizabeth Symonds parents, Peter Symonds and Elizabeth McKeen.
I still have a lot more research to do on both the Wooderson family and the Symonds family to complete their stories.
