Emma, third child of Peter Symonds and Elizabeth McKeen, was 24 years old and was born on 16 October 1836 in Dover, Kent. The Symonds family lived in Bulwark lane, Dover, Kent with Elizabeth’s sister, Sarah McKeen from 1851 to 1871. |

Two years before Martha Jane’s marriage, her mother, Emma Wooderson died at the age of 58 years. She was buried in Folkestone, Kent on 31 January 1895. In 1901, Henry Wooderson was an inmate at the Elham Union Workhouse in Etchinghill, Kent. He was still employed as a harbour porter however but obviously wasn’t able to support himself and needed lodgings in the workhouse.
