A Sussex Family: The Tingley's
George Tingley was born in about August 1833 in Horsted Keynes, the second child of Thomas Tingley and Jane Ann Sherlock. He was christened on 25 August 1833 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. George’s father, Thomas, was a farmer and young George worked on the farm as a labourer after he left school.
On 20 October 1855, George married Ellen Haynes, daughter of Thomas Day. Ellen had been married five years earlier, to James Haynes, a gardener from Lindfield, Sussex. James died in about June 1853 in Cuckfield district, Sussex at the age of 26 years, leaving Ellen widowed and with a young son, Henry, to look after. George gained employment as a gamekeeper and they moved to the Gamekeepers Lodge in Lindfield, Sussex. In 1861 Thomas and Ellen had three young children of their own, as well as 10-year-old Henry.
By 1871, George and Ellen had moved their family to 11 Chart Cottages, Cuckfield, Sussex. Both George and his step-son, Henry, were employed as labourers. The eldest daughter, Alice, was a domestic servant. Younger daughters Ellen, Mary, Jane and sons, George and Albert were all of school age and youngest son, Charles was 5-months-old. |
Young Ellen Tingley died in about June 1871 in Cuckfield district at the age of 12 years. George Tingley died in May 1878 in Cuckfield district and was buried on 20 May 1878 at St Wilfrid's District Church Cemetery, Hayward’s Heath, Sussex. He was 44 years old.
Alice Tingley married Thomas Mitchell on Christmas Day 1876 in Hayward’s Heath, Sussex. Alice and Thomas had a family of fourteen children. Ellen Tingley was living at 2 Petland Gardens in Cuckfield, Sussex by 1881. Two of her sons were working as labourers, while the youngest, Charles, was still at school. Her 15-year-old daughter, Jane, was helping out at home. George Thomas Tingley married on 24 June 1882. His wife, Ellen Eliza Warton was the daughter of John Divine Warton and Ann Marler. Ellen Tingley died in about September 1887 in Reigate, Surrey at the age of 57 years. |
Charles Alfred Tingley was married in about December 1898 in Reigate, Surrey to Selina Medwell. Charles was a Carpenter and Joiner. He lived with his sisters, Mary and Jane in Kingswood, Surrey before his marriage. The sisters ran a laundry business from their home. In 1901, Charles and Selina were living in Mogadore road, Kingswood, Surrey. By 1911, they had moved to Hope Cottage in Kingswood, Surrey. Charles and Selina had four children. Charles Tingley died on 21 November 1938 and after his death, Selina, together with her daughter, Selina May, kept a general store in Banstead, Surrey.

They had seven children: Alice, Ellen Elizabeth, George Thomas, Albert, Mary, Jane Sherlock and Charles Alfred. Ellen had one son from her first marriage: Henry.

Thomas was born in about 1844 in Cuckfield, Sussex, was christened on 6 October 1844 in Cuckfield, Sussex and died in March quarter 1934 in Cuckfield district, Sussex at age 90 years. They had fourteen children: Thomas George, Anne, Henry, Alice, Ellen, Ethel Mary, Jane Ada, Mabel, Edith Kate, Charles Alfred, Emily. William James, Violet May and Ernest Edward.

Ellen was born on 12 October 1859 in Brighton, Sussex, was christened on 26 July 1863 in Brighton, Sussex and died on 22 June 1937 in Patcham, Sussex at age 77 years. They had five children: George Albert, Edith Nelly, Frank Charles, Kate Selina and Frederick Richard.

Charles married Selina Medwell in December quarter 1898 in Reigate, Surrey. Selina was born on 6 June 1874 in Clipsham, Rutlandshire and died in December quarter 1959 in Surrey at age 85 years. They had four children: Horace Charles, John Gilbert, Selina May and Robert George.
