A Sussex Family: The Tingley's
Thomas Tingley was born in December 1793 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. He was the fourth child of James Tingley and Jane Thorpe. Thomas was christened on 15 December 1793 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.
On 24 May 1830, Thomas Tingley married Jane Ann Newnham, daughter of Lashmar and Jane Sherlock. Jane had been married previously to Benjamin Newnham on 6 July 1823 in Hamsey, Sussex. Benjamin Newnham died in May 1829 in Fletching, Sussex at the age of 26. Jane was left a widow with a 5-year-old son to care for. Her son was named Benjamin after his father.
Thomas and Jane had eight or nine children together. The eldest, Thomas was born in March 1831, George was born in August 1833, Jane was born in October 1836 and Eleanor in about September 1839. All were born in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.

Thomas and Jane had eight or nine children together. The eldest, Thomas was born in March 1831, George was born in August 1833, Jane was born in October 1836 and Eleanor in about September 1839. All were born in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.
In 1841, Thomas, Jane and the four eldest children were living on Kidborough Farm near Horsted Keynes, Sussex. Thomas was a farmer. Jane’s son Benjamin was also living with them and he was a shoemaker’s apprentice.
Over the next ten years, four more children were born, Mary in about June 1842, William on 14 November 1845, Fanny on 13 November 1848 and James Lashmer in about March 1850. Again, they were all born in Horsted Keynes. Fanny may have died as an infant, as she does not appear on the 1851 census. However, the other children were all still at home. Thomas Tingley was farming 36 acres of land near Kidborough Farm in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. Thomas jnr. and George worked on the farm as labourers. Jane, Eleanor, Mary, William and James were at home with their mother. Benjamin Newnham was not with the family in 1851. Thomas and Jane Tingley may have had another daughter, Sarah, born in 1851. There is a record of the burial of an infant named Sarah Tingley who died in April 1851 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex, but no record of her birth or christening.
Jane Tingley married George John Rumary on 29 June 1855 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex and they had seven children. After Jane’s death in 1875 at the age of 38 years, George Rumary married Jane Waterage, daughter of John and Ann Stringer and widow of George Waterage. George Tingley married Ellen Haynes, daughter of Thomas Day and widow of James Haynes, on 20 October 1855 in Horsted Keynes. Ellen had a son, Henry, from her first marriage and she and George and seven children. |
Eleanor Tingley was married on 2 July 1859 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex to local blacksmith Charles Sharpe Wood. They had seven children before Eleanor’s death in about December 1875 in Uckfield, Sussex. Charles Wood went on to marry twice more and had another six children.
Thomas Tingley jnr. married on 14 March 1857 to Frances Tomsett and they had six children, Thomas, Esther, Owen, William, Alfred and Mary Jane. After Frances’ death in 1888, Thomas married Tamar Tomsett, widow of Joseph Tomsett and sister-in-law of his first wife Frances. Tamar had six sons from her first marriage.
Mary Tingley married Albert Samson Hampton on 24 December 1863 in Brighton, Sussex. Albert was a blacksmith and wheelwright. He did well in business and was able to support himself after his retirement. Albert and Mary Hampton had four children, Elizabeth, John Thomas, Phoebe Eunice and Albert Samson. |
On 20 February 1867, William Tingley married Esther Smith in West Hoathly, Sussex. William was a bootmaker and he was also a pastor at the chapel in Scaynes Hill, Sussex. William and Esther had seven children before her death in about June 1885. Their children, Moses, Miriam Rhoda, Ruth, Ebenezer, William Menoah, John Josiah and Judah Samuel were all born in Lindfield, Sussex. William remarried a year later; his second wife was Miriam Gower. William and Miriam had three children, Eunice, Dora Candice and Thomas.

Thomas and Jane’s youngest son, James Lashmer Tingley was married on 7 January 1871 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. He and his wife, Mary Ann Etherton had nine children together. For many years, James earned his living as a gamekeeper. In his later years he worked as a stationary engine driver and electrician.
Jane Ann Tingley died in about June 1869 in Cuckfield district, Sussex at the age of 66 years. Less than twelve months later Thomas Tingley died on 30 May 1870 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex at the age of 76 years. Thomas did leave a will when he died and one of the executors was his stepson, Benjamin Newnham.
Jane Ann Tingley died in about June 1869 in Cuckfield district, Sussex at the age of 66 years. Less than twelve months later Thomas Tingley died on 30 May 1870 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex at the age of 76 years. Tamar had six sons from her first marriage: Joseph, Alfred, Herbert. George, Ernest and Arthur Thomas.

Ellen was born in about 1830, was christened on 6 June 1830 in Buxted, Sussex and died in September quarter 1887 in Reigate, Surrey at age 57 years. They had seven children: Alice, Ellen Elizabeth, George Thomas, Albert, Mary, Jane Sherlock and Charles Alfred. Ellen had one son from her first marriage: Henry.

They had seven children: Mary Jane, George John, Agnes Ann, Jane Elizabeth, Flora, Arthur Thomas and Ernest Dorsey. George next married Jane Waterage, widow of George Waterage, on 30 September 1878 in Brighton, Sussex. They had two children: Frederick George and Andrew Edwin.

Eleanor married Charles Sharpe Wood on 2 July 1859 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. Charles was born in about 1837 in Lindfield, Sussex, was christened on 23 April 1837 in Lindfield, Sussex and died on 31 May 1898 in Lewes, Sussex at age 61 years. They had seven children: John, Charles William, George, Wallace, Frederick, Alice Ellen and Thomas Arthur. Charles next married Caroline Hards on 21 October 1876 in Steyning, Sussex. Caroline was born in December quarter 1848 in Steyning, Sussex, was christened on 7 January 1849 in Steyning, Sussex and died in June 1881 in Uckfield district, Sussex at age 32 years. They had three children: Kate, Caroline Elizabeth and William Hugh. Charles next married Harriet Luckens in June quarter 1883 in Uckfield district, Sussex. Harriett was born in March quarter 1853 in East Grinstead, Sussex. They had three children: Anna Daynes, Ernest and Percy.
- Mary Tingley was born in June quarter 1842 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex and died in December quarter 1878 in Steyning district, Sussex at age 36 years. Mary married Albert Samson Hampton on 24 December 1863 in Brighton, Sussex. Albert was born in December quarter 1839 in Flamer, Sussex, was christened on 9 February 1840 in Flamer, Sussex and died in December quarter 1911 in Steyning district, Sussex at age 72 years. They had four children: Elizabeth, John Thomas, Phoebe Eunice and Albert Samson. Albert next married Sarah Scott in March quarter 1880 in Brighton, Sussex.
- William Tingley was born on 14 November 1845 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex and died in June quarter 1915 in Scaynes Hill, Sussex at age 69 years. William married Esther Smith on 20 February 1867 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Esther was born in September quarter 1847 in Horsted Keynes and died in June quarter 1885 in Cuckfield, Sussex at age 37 years. They had nine children: Florence Emily, Henry Arthur, Alice Mary, Kate Elizabeth, Agnes, James, Eliza, Elizabeth Maud and Mabel Ellen.
