The Hussey's of Dorset
Charles Richard Hussey was born on 21 January 1831 in Camberwell, Surrey, England and was christened on 18 May 1831 in Camberwell, Surrey. Charles was living with his mother Ann and sister Sarah, at Norfolk place, St Mary Newington, Surrey on 30 March 1851. Charles was employed as a carpenter.
A year later, Charles Hussey decided to emigrate to South Australia. He boarded the ship Epaminondas which left Liverpool, Lancashire on 13 April 1852, arriving in Port Adelaide, South Australia on 1 August 1852. Charles was a 21-year-old carpenter at the time.
Charles Richard Hussey married Charlotte Welcome on 26 January 1857 at St John's Church, Halifax street, Adelaide, South Australia. 18-year-old Charlotte was the eldest daughter of James Welcome and Mary Ann Spiller. Charlotte Welcome had arrived in South Australia on board the ship Derwent on 28 December 1847 with her mother, Mary Ann and siblings, Robert, Alfred and Sarah. |
Nine months after their marriage, Charles and Charlotte's first child was born. A son, they named him Albert Henry. Little Albert did not live to see his second birthday; he died on 24 September 1859 at Union street, South Adelaide from bronchitis coupled with weakness from a previous attack of diphtheria. Just a few months later Lydia Sevier Hussey was born on 18 February 1860. Although her middle name seems to have had many variations in spelling, it is most likely that she was given the maiden name of her grandmother Ann Hussey nee Sevier.
Two years later another daughter was born, Edith Maria Hussey was born on 12 May 1862 in Edwardstown, South Australia. By the time Amelia Ada Hussey was born on 6 July 1864, the family had moved to the suburb of Mitcham in South Australia. Frederick Charles Hussey was born on 10 August 1867 and Charlotte Maud Hussey was born on 19 February 1870. Sadly Charlotte died just after her first birthday.
The Hussey family moved to the town of Moonta on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula by the time that their seventh child was born. Emily Welcome Hussey was born on 23 October 1873 and Blanche Cole Hussey was also born in Moonta, on 27 March 1876. The family returned to Adelaide some time after the birth of Blanche and were living in Southwark, near Adelaide when 6-year-old Blanche died. She was buried in the West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide on 27 September 1882.
Two more children completed the family of Charles and Charlotte Hussey - George Edgar born on 21 July 1879 in Adelaide and Florence Lillian born on 23 January 1884 in Southwark.
Charles Hussey was employed as a carpenter and a wheelwright for most of his working life. He must have done quite well in his trade as it seems the family lived in a large house on Franklin street in the city of Adelaide.
