From Mahood to Hood
William Edward Hood was born on 28 October 1866 in Gumeracha, South Australia. William was employed as a Trolley Driver in Adelaide. On 15 August 1892, 25-year-old William married Amelia Ada Hussey at the minister’s residence in Brown street, Adelaide. Amelia, the daughter of Charles Richard Hussey and Charlotte Welcome, was 28 years old.
William and Amelia had two children before they married: Arthur Percy who was born in Mildura, Victoria on 16 August 1890 and Edith Alice born on 8 August 1891 in Tea Tree Gully, South Australia. After their marriage they had another six children. Harrold, born on 4 March 1894 and Frederick Charles Theodore born on 19 April 1895, both died as infants. A daughter, Ruby Pearl was born on 22 February 1897 in Adelaide, followed three years later by Elsie Florence, who was born on 30 September 1900 in Adelaide. Another son, Victor Gordon, born on 4 April 1904 in Queenstown, also died as an infant. Finally, to complete their family, a daughter was born on 7 September 1905 at Queenstown. They named her Daisy Olive Blanche.
Sadly, young Daisy did not grow up knowing her father. William Edward Hood died suddenly on 23 January 1908 when he was 41 years old.
Daisy’s older sister, Edith was married two years later. Edith married 22-year-old, William Harold Rains Coley on 2 July 1910 in Adelaide, South Australia. Edith was 18 years old.

Amelia Hood lived with her younger children near the Coley’s on Waymouth street, Adelaide. William Coley was employed as a horse-driver for the West End Brewery and when the Coley family moved to Liverpool street, just off Hindley street, to be closer for work, Amelia moved to Hindley street, opposite the West End Brewery.
William and Edith Coley had nine children. Their eldest daughter, born in 1907 died at the age of 2 months. Four sons followed - Harold William George in 1910, Frederick Charles Theodor in 1913, Arthur Edward in 1915 and Walter Victor in 1918. An unnamed baby daughter was born on 8 November 1920 but did not survive. However, three more daughters followed - Gladys Irene in 1922, Elsie Lillian in 1927 and Betty in 1932.
Daisy Hood married George Henry Winkler on 16 July 1921. Daisy was 15 years and 10 months old, Harry was almost 20 years old.
Arthur Percy Hood (known as Percy) was very sick with influenza in 1921, a yellow flag was fastened on Amelia’s front gate to signify that the house was quarantined. Percy recovered, but many did not survive the epidemic that year. Percy never married and remained close with his younger sister Daisy until his death in 1965. Elsie Florence Hood married Herold Willhelm Lohmeyer on 7 July 1923 at St Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Adelaide, South Australia. Herold and Elsie had two children, Lorna Veronica in 1924 and Colin Raymond in 1926. Herold worked at the Islington Railway Works as an electrician. On 26 September 1927 an accident occurred while Herold was working on an electric door lock. He was killed instantly after coming into contact with an electric current. Herold was working alone at the time and his body was not discovered until the next morning. Herold was just 30 years old. Elsie never remarried, she died on 3 January 1969 in Hackney, South Australia at the age of 68 years. Herold and Elsie Lohmeyer were buried at West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide. |
Young Daisy was very close to her sister Edith, especially after their mother, Amelia, died on 23 November 1927 at the age of 63 years. Daisy was 22 years old when she lost her mother. She formed a life-long friendship with Edith’s daughter, Elsie. Elsie married Ron Spain on 25 March 1948, both Elsie and Ron were very close to her Aunt Daisy.
Ruby Hood did not marry, she worked in a biscuit factory in Adelaide. On 15 March 1943, Ruby was crossing the train tracks between the platforms at the Bowden Railway Station, when she was struck by a train. She died instantly. Ruby was 46 years old.

They had nine children: Myrtle Eva, Harold William George, Frederick Charles Theodor, Arthur Edward, Walter Victor, an unnamed infant daughter, Gladys Irene, Elsie Lillian and Betty.
