James Welcome was born in about 1815. One of five children born to James Welcome and Charlotte Wheatland, James was christened on 8 January 1815 in Oving, Sussex along with his twin brother Samuel. James Welcome married Mary Ann Spiller on 4 June 1835 in Manchester Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire. Mary Ann was the daughter of Robert Spiller and Mary Ann Reynolds.
In 1841, James and Mary Ann were boarding at the residence of Sarah Horsley of Waterhouse lane, Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire. They had two children, Robert James aged 4 years and Charlotte aged 2 years. James recorded his occupation as a coach guard.
Two more children were born to James and Mary Ann Welcome, Alfred in 1842 and Sarah Ann in 1845. It is likely that sometime after the birth of Sarah Ann, that James and Mary Ann separated. Mary Ann left England with five children on the Derwent which departed London on 1 September 1847 and arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia on 27 December 1847. According to the passenger arrivals recorded in the South Australian Register on 29 December 1847, the five children were Robert, Charlotte, Alfred, Sarah and Lamond Welcome . Mary Ann's name was recorded as Margaret Welcome. She may have had another child before she left England, however no record of Lamond Welcome has been located at this time. Mary Ann's parents had immigrated to South Australia in 1839, it is quite likely that Mary Ann came to South Australia to be with her family after the death of her father.
James Welcome remarried on 4 January 1852 in Liverpool, Lancashire. His second wife was Catherine Mary Montgomery. Catherine died in about March 1856 in Liverpool, Lancashire. James very quickly married again. In about June 1856 he married Mary Hessey, nee Nelson, widow of William Hessey. James and Mary had five children, Samuel James, Irene, Mary Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Charlotte. Both Irene and Mary Elizabeth died very young. Whether or not the other children knew about their half-siblings in Australia is not known.
Both Robert James Welcome and his brother Alfred settled in the south-east town of Naracoorte, South Australia after the death of their mother on 15 June 1861. Mary Ann Welcome died at the home of her mother, Mary Ann Spiller, in Grenfell street, Adelaide, South Australia. She was 46 years old. She was buried in West terrace cemetery, Adelaide on 17 June 1861.
Charlotte Welcome had married Charles Richard Hussey on 26 January 1857 at St John's Church, Adelaide, South Australia. Charlotte bore ten children, three sons and seven daughters. Alfred Welcome was married on 17 October 1863 at St Paul's Church, Pultney street, Adelaide, South Australia. His wife, Bridget Martin nee Frawley, was the widow of Jeremiah Martin. Sarah Ann Welcome was married on 28 January 1865 in Adelaide, South Australia. She and her husband, Robert Fife, had a large family of five sons and four daughters. Robert James Welcome married Susan Sharpley on 8 May 1866 at Kincraig (Naracoorte), South Australia. Robert bought property at Naracoorte in the early 1860's. He named the property Duntrileague after the place of birth of his wife Susan. What became of the child, Lamond, who travelled to Australia with his mother and siblings is not known.

His son, Samuel James was just twelve years old, daughters, Mary Anne and Charlotte were only eight and five. Mary Welcome remarried in about December 1869 in Hull, Yorkshire. Her new husband was 57-year-old widower Frederick Ledger. Frederick was a stonemason, the family lived at 24 Little Queen street in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire in 1871. Mary Ledger kept a green grocers store. By 1881, they had moved to Eton street, Holy Trinity, Yorkshire-East Riding.
Mary Ledger died in about March 1885 in Hull, Yorkshire at the age of 58 years. Frederick Ledger died eleven years later in about September 1896 in Sculcoates, Yorkshire-East Riding at the age of 85 years.

Susan was born in 1838 in Duntryleague, Galbally Parish, Limerick, Ireland and died on 24 March 1918 in Naracoorte, South Australia at age 80 years. They had five children: Mary Ann, Sarah Ann, Alfred James, Susan and William.
- Charlotte Welcome was born on 20 January 1839 in Chichester, Sussex, England and died on 13 October 1909 in Adelaide, South Australia at age 70 years. Charlotte married Charles Richard Hussey on 26 January 1857 in Adelaide, South Australia. Charles was born on 21 January 1831 in Camberwell, Surrey, England and died on 3 September 1914 in Melbourne, Victoria at age 83 years. They had ten children: Albert Henry, Lidia Sevier, Edith Maria, Amelia Ada, Frederick Charles, Charlotte Maud, Emily Welcome, Blanche Cole, George Edgar and Florence Lillian.
- Alfred Welcome was born on 20 December 1842 in Oving, Sussex and christened on 22 February 1846 in Oving, Sussex. Alfred married Bridget Martin nee Frawley on 17 October 1863 in Adelaide, South Australia. Bridget was born in about 1835. They had two children: Robert Francis and Mary Ann. Alfred Welcome travelled to India to deliver horses in about 1867 and it is likely he did not return to Australia. Bridget Welcome may have died in 1913, however this has not been confirmed.
- Sarah Ann Welcome was born on 22 February 1845 in Oving, Sussex and died on 12 March 1900 in Adelaide, South Australia at age 54 years. Sarah marriage Robert Fife on 28 January 1865 in Adelaide, South Australia. Robert was born in about 1841 and died on 29 May 1898 in Adelaide, South Australia at age 57 years. They had nine children: Robert Henry, Arthur Alfred, Sidney Herbert, Rosa Beatrice, Walter, Evaline, Clara Ethel, Frank Albert and Bertha Eliner.
- Samuel James Welcome was born on 27 April 1857 in Liverpool, Lancashire and died in September quarter 1920 in Myton, Yorkshire at age 63 years. Samuel married Mary Alice Jackson on 11 November 1879 in Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire. Mary was born in about 1857 in Belfast, Northern Ireland and died in March quarter 1944 in Hull, Yorkshire at age 87 years. They had two children: John Nelson and Ernest William.
- Irene Welcome was born on 23 June 1858 in Liverpool, Lancashire and died in September quarter 1858 in Liverpool, Lancashire as an infant.
- Mary Elizabeth Welcome was born on 23 June 1858 in Liverpool, Lancashire and died in June quarter 1859 in Liverpool, Lancashire at age 1 year.

Thomas was born in about 1842 in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire, was christened on 4 April 1842 at Holy Trinity Church, Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire and died in June quarter 1905 in Sculcoates, Yorkshire at age 63 years. They had five children: William Frederick, Thomas Welcome, Hilda Elizabeth, Albert Victor and George Henry Nelson.
- Charlotte Welcome was born on 2 February 1864 in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire, was christened on 28 February 1864 in Hull, Yorkshire and died on 10 January 1933 in Stockport, Lancashire at age 68 years. Charlotte married Albert Edward Whitaker Stansfield on 7 June 1885 in Hull, Yorkshire. Albert was born in about 1863 in Todmorden, Lancashire and died in March quarter 1922 in Prestwich, Lancashire at age 45 years. They had three children: Ethel Mary, William and Gladys Lilian.
