The Field's of London
William Field was born on 5 October 1837 in Westminster, Middlesex. William was the sixth child of Samuel Field and Mary Souster. William was christened at St Luke Old Street Parish, Finsbury, Middlesex on 22 October 1837. William’s father was a carman at that time and the family lived in Kelly terrace, Islington, Middlesex.
Samuel and Mary Field had moved to Vine street, Westminster, Middlesex by 1841 and they had six children at home, 4-year-old William was the youngest. William’s father, Samuel Field, died in April 1846 at the age of 50 years. William and his younger brothers were raised by their mother, Mary, who took on work at the laundry as a mangler to help make ends meet. In 1851, Mary Field and her children were living at 7 Marsham street, Westminster, Middlesex. William had left school and was working as an errand boy. |
William Field married on 9 October 1858 in Westminster, Middlesex. His wife, Mary Maria Turney was the daughter of Nathaniel Turney and Mary Higgs. In 1861, William, Maria and their 1-year-old daughter Mary Ann, lived at 2 Carpenter street, Westminster, Middlesex. William was working as a labourer.
By 1871, the family had moved to 47 Horseferry road, St John Parish, Westminster, London-Middlesex. There were now three more children, sons William Thomas, Samuel Henry and James. William Field was still employed as a labourer.
A fifth child was born to William and Maria Field on 17 December 1877, a daughter who they named Ellen Sophia. In 1881, the Field family lived at 45 Romney street, St George Hanover Square, London. William Field was employed as a labourer at the Gas Works. Eldest daughter, Mary Ann married Alfred Aaron Beck three years earlier, but was living at home with her parents and two of her brothers in 1881.

Mary Maria Field died in about March 1884 at the age of 46 years. William remarried about eighteen months later, His second wife was Eliza Ann Norris, the daughter of Thomas Norris and Elizabeth Ann McCarthy. Eliza’s father died when she was very young and she lived with her grandfather, James McCarthy and grandmother Mary Ann McCarthy in 1871 at 57 Romney street, Westminster, London, just a few houses away from William Field. At the time of their marriage on 19 September 1885 in Battersea, London, William was employed as a service layer for the gas company and his address was 38 Sheepcote lane, the same address as Eliza Norris.

In 1891, William and Eliza had moved to 68 Catherine street, Lambeth, Middlesex. William’s youngest daughter from his first marriage was now living with them as well as new arrival, Ann Eliza, who was two months old. Florence, Elizabeth and Thomas were at school. Although, 8-year-old Florence (Florrie) and 5-year-old Elizabeth Ann (Lizzie) were also recorded living with their grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Slaughter and her husband, James, in Surrey street, Arundel, Sussex at that time. Youngest son, Albert, was sickly and sadly he died later that year at just two years old.
Four more children were born before 1901, Charlotte Maude, Edward James, Josephine Mabel and St John Philip Claude (known as Claude to the family). Edward James Field died at just a few months old in about December 1896. By that time William and Eliza had moved away from London and were living in Sussex. Josephine was born on 15 March 1898 in Arundel, Sussex, as was Claude the following year.
In 1901, William and Eliza lived on East street, Lyminster, West Sussex. William was still working for the Gas Works. Six of the children were still at home, Florence, Elizabeth, Thomas, Charlotte, Josephine and Claude. Ten-year-old Annie was living with her grandmother Elizabeth and her second husband, James Slaughter, in Arundel, Sussex. James was an innkeeper and they lived at the Hare and Hound Inn in Surrey street, Arundel.
Florence Field married Joseph Jonas Lovett in about September 1904. Joseph was born in Cowley, Sussex in 1886, the son of Joseph Henry Lovett and Alice Thornton. One more daughter completed the family of ten children born to William and Eliza Field. Rose Field was born on 4 September 1907 in East Preston district, Sussex. Ann Eliza Field married Edwin Alfred Collins-King in about June 1909. Ann was living at 81 Sugden road, Worthing, Sussex in 1911, she was working as a laundry ironer. Her sister, Elizabeth, was living with her, together with Elizabeth’s daughter Lavinia.

In 1911, William Field was living with his daughter Florence and her husband Joseph Lovett and their three children, at 28 East street, Wick, Sussex. Joseph was a brick-maker and William was receiving a pension from the Gas Light Like Company where had worked for many years. Eliza Field, in the meantime, was living at 77 Sugden road, Worthing, Sussex, just a couple of houses away from her daughters Ann and Elizabeth. Eliza was earning an income doing needlework, son Thomas was a ganger for a nailing company and Charlotte was a calendar hand at the laundry. (A "calendar machine" is a type of rolling ironing machine for ironing of large flat items such as sheets) Claude and Rose were at home with their mother, however Josephine Field was with her grandmother, Elizabeth Slaughter, in Surrey street, Arundel, Sussex. In fact, Josephine lived with her grandparents from the age of 10 years, up until she was 15 years old. She enjoyed playing in the woods and walking by the river Arun. Arundel is a picturesque market town with a medieval castle atop a hill overlooking the town.

Eliza Ann Field died in about September 1912 in East Preston district, Sussex. She was 51 years old.
Elizabeth Field was married on 25 January 1913 in East Preston, district. Her husband, Ernest Edwin Gent, was the son of Edward Gent and Ann Hopkins from Angmering, Sussex.

Thomas Field enlisted in the Royal Engineers, 281st Auxiliary Transport Company in 1914 as a driver. He served in France and Flanders. Thomas was killed on 16 July 1918, his memorial is located at Vignacourt British Cemetery, Somme, France. Thomas may have married before he was sent overseas on military service. The records show that he was the husband of Ethel Dora Field of 5 Ash Cottages, Worthing, Sussex.
Charlotte Field was married in about June 1916. Her husband was Harry Alfred Chapman and they had three sons, Maurice, Ernest and Donald. Josephine Field married Arthur Sydney Wicks on 10 February 1919 in East Preston district, Sussex. Arthur was a stoker in the Royal Navy and was away serving aboard HMS Lyra in the early years of their marriage. Arthur was discharged from the navy on 7 June 1922. Claude Field married Agnes Elliott in about March 1921. They had four children, Irene, Frederick, Thomas and John. Claude was employed as a bricklayer in 1939. And last, but not least, Rose Field was married in about June 1930 in Kidderminster, Worcestershire. Rose and her husband, Francis Aubrey Tebby, had four children, John, Roy, Edwin and Ann. |
William Field died a few years before seeing his youngest child married. He died in about June 1924 in Steyning, Sussex at the age of 86 years.
