The Field's of London
Samuel Field was born on 18 December 1795 in Shoreditch, London and was christened on 7 February 1796 at St Leonards Church in Shoreditch, London. Samuel was the son of William and Sophia Field.
Samuel married Mary Souster on 10 March 1823 in Bletchley, Buckinghamshire. Mary was the daughter of William and Mary Souster and she was born in about 1802 in Water Eaton, Buckinghamshire. Mary was christened on 2 May 1802 in Bletchley, Buckinghamshire. Samuel and Mary had four daughters between 1825 and 1833, Elizabeth, Matilda, Sarah Ann and Eliza. They were followed by four sons, Samuel, William, John and Thomas. In 1837, when their son William, was born, Samuel was employed as a carman; he was probably a delivery man. Samuel and Mary lived on Kelly terrace in St. Luke Parish, Islington, Middlesex at that time. |
By 1841 the family had moved to Vine street, Westminster, Middlesex. There were six children at home. Samuel was still working as a carman. Five years later Samuel Field died in about April 1846 in Westminster, Middlesex. He was buried at St John the Evangelist, Smith Square in Westminster, Middlesex on 17 April 1846. Samuel was 50 years old.
Mary Field moved to 7 Marsham street, Westminster, Middlesex. In 1851 she had her daughters, Matilda and Eliza, and sons, Samuel, William and Thomas at home. All except the youngest boy, Thomas, were working. The girls were house servants, Samuel was a pot boy and William an errand boy. Mary Field was also employed; she was a mangler in a laundry. Her daughter Sarah and Sarah’s husband, William Gates were living with them as well. William was working as a government porter and Sarah was a charwoman. |
Ten years later and Mary Field was supporting herself working as a nurse, most likely she acted as the local midwife. Mary was living at 13 Holland street, Westminster, Middlesex with just 18-year-old Thomas at home. Matilda Field was married, she married George John Clark in about September 1854. Matilda and George were living next door at 12 Holland street, Westminster, Middlesex. Sarah Field had married just before Christmas 1850. In 1861, Sarah and William Gates were also living next door at number 12 Holland street, with their three children. Eliza Field was also married. She married Martin Wright in about September 1852 in Westminster, Middlesex. Eliza and Martin lived at 4 Bell place, Westminster, Middlesex and in 1861 they had a family of five children. Samuel Field married Sarah Ann Fellows in about September 1858, they were living at 14 Great Chapel street, Westminster, Middlesex and Samuel was employed as a Boot Maker’s Shopman. William Field also married in 1858, on 9 October. William’s first wife was Mary Maria Turney. They lived at 2 Carpenter street, Westminster, Middlesex in 1861 with their eldest daughter, Mary Ann. William was a labourer.
By 1871, Mary Field had moved to 1 Carpenter street, Westminster, Middlesex. Thomas was still living at home, but now he had a wife and three children with him. Mary Field was still nursing, Thomas was a labourer and his wife, Elizabeth, was a laundress.
Thomas Field had taken over the household at 1 Carpenter street, Westminster by 1881. Four more children had been born to Thomas and Elizabeth during the last ten years. All except the youngest son, William Samuel, were at school. However, eldest son, Thomas Henry was helping support the family working as a labourer. Thomas’s mother, 80-year-old Mary Field, was also living with them.
Mary Field died in about September 1890 in St George Hanover Square Parish, London at the age of 88 years.

They had three children: George John, Henry William and Hannah Mary. George was previously married to Elizabeth Moore in June quarter 1851 in Islington, London. Elizabeth was born in about 1825 in Westminster, Middlesex and died in December quarter 1851 in Westminster, Middlesex at age 26 years. They had two children: George and Ferdinand Joseph.
- Sarah Ann Field was born in about 1831 in Islington, Middlesex and died in June quarter 1896 in St George Hanover Square Parish, London at age 65 years. Sarah married William Gates on 23 December 1850 in Lambeth, Surrey. William was born in about 1825 in High Barnet, Hertfordshire and died in June quarter 1891 in Woolwich, London at age 66 years. They had six children: William Samuel, Eliza, Sarah Ann, Henry, Laura and Robert Samuel.
- Eliza Field was born on 24 August 1833 in Islington, Middlesex and was christened on 8 November 1835 in Finsbury, Middlesex. Eliza married Martin Wright in September quarter 1852 in Westminster, Middlesex. Martin was born in about 1828 in Suffolk. They had five children: John Martin, George Samuel, William Henry, Emily Mercy and Edward.

Samuel was born in June quarter 1850 in South Petherton, Somerset.

William married Mary Maria Turney on 9 October 1858 in Westminster, Middlesex. Mary was born on 24 November 1837 in Westminster, Middlesex, was christened on 24 December 1837 at St John the Evangelist Church, Smith Square, Westminster, Middlesex and died in March quarter 1884 in St George Hanover Square Parish, London at age 46 years. They had five children: Mary Ann, William Thomas Nathaniel, Samuel Henry, James and Ellen Sophia. William next married Eliza Ann Norris on 19 September 1885 in Battersea, London. Eliza was born in about 1861 in Westminster, Middlesex and died in September quarter 1912 in East Preston district, Sussex at age 51 years. They had ten children: Florence Matilda, Elizabeth Ann, Thomas William, Albert Victor, Ann Eliza, Charlotte Maude, Edward James, Josephine Mabel, St John Philip Claude and Rose.
