The Norris Mystery
Jame McCarthy was born in about 1800 in either London, Middlesex or possibly in Ireland. On 16 April 1822, James married Mary Ann Leadbetter at St Martin in the Fields Parish, Westminster, Middlesex. Mary Ann was born in about 1801 and was also either born in London, Middlesex or in Ireland.
In 1841, James and Mary Ann were living at Union Gardens in Tower Hamlets, Middlesex with their seven children. James was a printer and eldest son, John, was an apprentice. By 1851, the family had moved to 46 Richmond Buildings, Brighton, Sussex where youngest daughter, Emma, was born in 1846. James was still employed as a printer, Mary Ann was now working as a gloveress, son Archibald was a carpenter’s apprentice and daughters Ellen and Elizabeth were both working also, Ellen as a house maid and Elizabeth as a nurse maid. In about September 1852, Ellen McCarthy married Charles Harris in Brighton, Sussex. Charles was born in about 1832 in Brighton, Sussex. Archibald McCarthy was married before 1858. He and his wife Mary (O’Shaughnessy?) had six children. Elizabeth Ann McCarthy was also married in about 1858. She married Thomas Norris in about March 1858 in Westminster, Middlesex. |
By 1861, the family were back in Westminster, Middlesex at 16 Grosvenor street. James is still a printer and Mary Ann was also still working as a needlewoman. Only youngest daughter, Emma was at home, she was employed as a house servant. However, Emma McCarthy’s husband, Charles Harris and their daughter Ellen, were also living in the household.
In 1871, James and Mary Ann McCarthy were living at 57 Romney street, Westminster, Middlesex. James is still recorded as being employed as a printer and Mary Ann as a gloveress. Their daughter, Ellen Harris was living with them, she was employed as a charwoman. Grandchildren Eliza and John, children of Elizabeth Ann Norris, were also living with James and Mary Ann at that time. Mary Ann McCarthy died in about June 1875 in St George Hanover Square district, London. She was 74 years old. Unfortunately, James McCarthy ended his days at the St George Union Workhouse in Mount street, London. In 1881 he was recorded as a pauper inmate. James died in St George Hanover Square district, London, most likely at the workhouse, in about September 1884 at the age of 84 years. |

- Archibald McCarthy was born in about 1833 in London, Middlesex. Archibald married Mary (O’Shaughnessy?) before 1858. Mary was born in about 1836 in Limerick, Munster, Ireland. They had six children: Margaret, James, Mary, Cornelius, Emma and Archibald.
- Mary McCarthy was born in about 1837 in Middlesex.
- Elizabeth Ann McCarthy was born in about 1837 in London, Middlesex and died on 30 August 1915 in Worthing, Sussex at age 78 years. Elizabeth married Thomas Norris in March quarter 1858 in Westminster, Middlesex. Thomas was born in June quarter 1839 in Westminster, Middlesex and died in March quarter 1866 in Westminster, Middlesex at age 26 years. They had three children: Thomas James Joseph, Eliza Ann and John T. Elizabeth next married James Slaughter. James was born in about 1830 in Arundel, Sussex, was christened on 5 September 1830 in Arundel, Sussex and died on 7 September 1913 in East Preston district, Sussex at age 83 years. James was previously married to Frances Jupp on 30 September 1867 in Brighton, Sussex. Frances was born in about 1828 in Madehurst, Sussex, was christened on 30 November 1828 in Madehurst, Sussex and died in March quarter 1885 in East Preston district, Sussex at age 57 years. They had one son: William Jupp.
