La Rochelle departed Hamburg on 26 May 1855 and arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia on 4 September 1855.
In South Australia, Siegmund gained work on farms in the Barossa area, before his employment in the flour mills at Daveyston and Greenock in about 1857. Twenty-three-year-old Siegmund married Rosalie Alvine Emilie Simon on 6 February 1862 at Daveyston. Siegmund was employed in the Daveyston mill, however unable to procure a house in the area, in 1865, Siegmund purchased a small farm in Saddleworth, near Christian Winkler. Here they remained for the next two years, before eventually returning to Greenock, where Siegmund pursued business interests. |
Siegmund was well respected in the community and, in 1872, was appointed a local constable at Greenock. By 1873, Siegmund was employed at the local mill as a baker, but soon after, he moved his family to Gladstone, in the mid-north. He worked as a foreman at the Gladstone mill for over twenty years before joining the Farmers Union, where he was employed as an agent (wheat merchant) until his retirement in 1910.
During his thirteen years with the Farmers Union, Siegmund was the Gladstone representative for the SA Farmers Co-operation Union Advisory Committee. In June 1880, the Gladstone district council elected Siegmund as a local Constable and sometime later, he became the first auditor to the Corporation of the town of Gladstone. Siegmund was naturalized on 2 October 1895 at the age of fifty-seven.
At the time of his death in 1930 at the age of ninety-two, Siegmund had considerable property holdings in Gladstone and the surrounding district. Siegmund and Rosalie had a family of seven sons. Their first two children died before their second birthdays but the other five sons survived to adulthood and became well-respected in their own communities.
