Winkler Generations
August Christian Winkler was born on 18th October 1829, in Diebzig, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany. He arrived in South Australia on 13th April 1854 aboard the ship Wandrahm, from Hamburg. Christian was a weaver, but he turned his hand to farming and was living in Nain shortly after his arrival.
It is likely that Christian Winker was either a brother or cousin to Andreas and Siegmund Winkler, and that Christian was able to provide a home for the two brothers until they were able to establish themselves in the community. On 11th March 1855, Christian married Louise Rulf. Christian and Louise rented a property in Daveyston, near Greenock, for the next five years. Three sons and a daughter were born during this time, however, one of the sons only lived for six months. |
In 1859, Christian took up 125 acres of land near Saddleworth where he was eventually to successfully establish a freehold estate of over 400 acres. Christian and Louise had another four sons and two daughters, of these children, only two survived past their second birthday. Louise Winkler died on 4th April 1877. She was buried at a small cemetery in Whip Street, Saddleworth. Christian remarried on 18 April 1881, to another Louise - 47-year-old widow, Louise Zaenker, nee Hanke. Christian’s son, Gustav Adolph, took over the family property after Christian’s retirement.
Christian Winkler died on 2 February 1908 and was buried alongside his first wife in Whip Street cemetery. Also buried in the family plot was Gustav’s first wife Maria. Gustav’s son, George Gilbert Winkler, took over the Winkler farm after his father's death in 1943. When George died in 1974, the property was willed to the South Australian Government and was later developed into Winkler Park, officially opened on 17 September 1988.
