Wicks of Worthing
William Wicks was born in about 1811 in Broadwater, Sussex and was christened on 20 October 1811 in Broadwater, Sussex. He was the son of Thomas Wicks and Elizabeth Lillywhite.
William married Anne Searle on 4 November 1831 in Broadwater, Sussex. Anne was the daughter of Thomas Searle and Alice Ward who were married on 31 October 1805 in Arundel, Sussex. Anne had five siblings, William, Sophy, Harry, Miriam and Francis.
In 1841, William and Anne were living in Surrey street, New Shoreham, Sussex with their daughter, 3-year-old Emma and son, Thomas who was 3 months old. William was employed as a labourer. Thomas died on 20 November 1841 at the age of nine months.
On 19 February 1844, William and Anne welcomed another son who they named William, after his father. Sadly, young William lost his father just before his second birthday. William died on 1 January 1846 at Surrey street, Worthing, Sussex from consumption at the age of 34 years. He was buried on 6 January 1846 in Broadwater, Sussex.

By 1851, Anne Wicks was earning a living as a laundress, children Emma and William were at school and she had a local schoolmaster lodging with them at 10 Surrey street, Worthing, Sussex. Ten years later and Anne had moved to 15 Field row, Worthing, Sussex. She was still working as a laundress; her son William was employed as a painter and they had two lodgers.
Anne Wicks remarried on 10 August 1862 at Saint Nicholas Church, Brighton, Sussex. Her new husband was 41-year-old George Wicks. Whether or not George was related to her first husband William Wicks has not been established. In 1871 George and Anne were still living in Field row, Worthing, Sussex but had moved from number 15 to number 11. George was a painter and Anne was operating her laundry business. William was also at home but he now had a wife and two sons of his own. William had married Eliza Barnett on 21 September 1865 at the Parish Church in Broadwater, Sussex. They had two sons, William and Arthur Sidney. Young William died in about June 1871 in Worthing, Sussex at the age of 4 years. |
Anne Wicks was widowed once again. George Wicks died in about December 1877 in East Preston district, Sussex at the age of 55 years. Anne continued her laundry business at home, her daughter-in-law, Eliza, helped with the washing and ironing. Her son William was earning his living as a coal merchant; grandson, Arthur, was at school. The family were living together at 32 Chapel street, Worthing in 1881.
Anne Wicks died at 32 Chapel street, Worthing, Sussex on 7 March 1887 at the age of 72 years. The cause of death was given as “natural decay of nature” – or "old age" in other words. |

George was born in about 1822 in Worthing, Sussex and died in December quarter 1877 in East Preston, Sussex at age 55 years.

- William Wicks was born on 19 February 1844 in Worthing, Sussex, was christened on 19 February 1844 in Broadwater, Sussex and died on 18 July 1907 in East Preston, Sussex at age 63 years. William married Eliza Barnett on 21 September 1865 in Broadwater, Sussex. Eliza was born in about 1845 in Watersfield, Sussex, was christened on 20 April 1845 in Coldwaltham, Sussex and died on 12 August 1887 in Worthing, Sussex at age 42 years. They had two sons: William and Arthur Sidney.
