The Virgoe Family of Sussex
William Denyer was born on 2 February 1807 in Wisborough Green, Sussex and he was christened on 22 March 1807 in Wisborough Green, Sussex. William was the son of William Denyer and Elizabeth Miles who were married on 11 October 1799 in Wisborough Green and had four children, Charles, James, William and Elizabeth.
William Denyer married Elizabeth Reeves on 24 December 1833 in Wisborough Green, Sussex. Elizabeth was the daughter of Arthur Reeves and Mary Knight. Arthur and Mary were married on 28 February 1797 in Wisborough Green and had three children, Arthur, Elizabeth and William.
In 1841, William and Elizabeth were living at Tanners in Billinghurst, Sussex with their three children, Alfred, Nathan and Mary Ann. William was an agricultural labourer. By 1851, William and Elizabeth had another five children, Elizabeth, Harriett, Charles, Esther and William. Elizabeth and her youngest son, William, were at the home of Elizabeth’s brother, Arthur Reeves and his wife Harriet in Loxwood, Sussex in 1851. William Denyer was looking after the other children at home in Little Tanners, Billinghurst, Sussex. The two eldest boys, Alfred and Nathan were working as agricultural labourers along with their father. |
Two more children completed the family of William and Elizabeth Denyer, Ellen was born in 1851 and Edwin in 1854.
In 1861 the family had moved to Lower Hill House in Rudgwick, Sussex, sons Charles, William and Edwin and daughters Esther and Ellen were still at home. Nathan was lodging at the home of Rufus Steel of Benfield House, Hangleton, Sussex and working as an agricultural labourer and 20-year-old Elizabeth Denyer was employed by hotel keeper Thomas Russell of the Albion Hotel in Chapel street, Worthing Sussex as a housemaid.
Nathan Denyer was married on 14 December 1861 in Cranleigh, Surrey to Jane Barnett, the daughter of Samuel Barnett and Jane Woods. By 1871, Nathan and Jane had four children and were living at the Rookery in Hangleton, Sussex. |
Mary Ann Denyer was married a few months later. She married Joseph Gilbert on 28 April 1862 in Bethnal Green, London. Mary Ann and Joseph had four children. Mary Ann Gilbert died in about September 1870 in East Preston district, Sussex at the age of 31 years. The children were all sent to relatives after her death.
Elizabeth Denyer was married to William John Virgoe on 18 May 1862 in Brighton, Sussex. In 1871, William and Elizabeth Virgoe had five children of their own and had also taken in two of Elizabeth’s nieces, the children of her sister Mary Ann Gilbert.
Harriett Denyer died in about December 1862 in Petworth, Sussex at the age of 19 years and her sister, Esther died two years later at the age of 16 years.
By 1871, William and Elizabeth Denyer had moved to Wood House in Loxwood, Sussex, they had two sons at home, William and Edwin, who were both working as labourers. They had also taken in their grandson Joseph Albert Gilbert after the death of his mother, Mary Ann the previous year.
Edwin Denyer was married on 27 March 1875 in Alfold, Surrey. His wife, Ellen Strudwick, was the daughter of James Strudwick and Maria Vincent. In 1881, Edwin and Ellen were living at Alfold Bars, Loxwood, Sussex and Edwin worked as an agricultural labourer. Nathan Denyer and his wife, Jane together with five of their ten children, lived in Hangleton Cottage, Portslade, Sussex in 1881. Nathan’s niece, Ellen Gilbert, was living with the family.
William and Elizabeth Denyer were living in Church Row, Wisborough Green, Sussex in 1881. All of the children had left home, William was retired but Elizabeth was working as a seamstress to help ends meet. In 1891, William and Elizabeth lived in the Village, Wisborough Green, Sussex.
William Denyer died in about December 1893 in Petworth district, Sussex at the age of 86 years. Elizabeth Denyer died four years later in about September 1897 at the age of 84 years.
Harriett Denyer died in about December 1862 in Petworth, Sussex at the age of 19 years and her sister, Esther died two years later at the age of 16 years.

Mary Ann married Joseph Gilbert on 28 April 1862 in Bethnal Green, London. They had four children: Joseph Albert, Arthur Henry, Ellen Mary and Louisa.

They had eleven children: Annie, Edward, Harriet Caroline, William John, Henry Alfred, Elizabeth, Frederick Charles, Ellen Louisa, Joseph Albert, James George and Frank Robert.
