The Hussey's of Dorset
Thomas Reynolds was born in about 1757 in Chidham, Sussex. Thomas was one of twelve children born to John Reynolds and Mary Morley. Thomas was christened on 24 April 1757 in Chidham, Sussex, a village just west of the city of Chichester.
On 23 July 1781, Thomas Reynolds married Sarah Arnold, the eldest daughter of John Arnold and Ann Woolgar, in the Parish Church, Donnington, Sussex. The first of their nine children, Thomas was born in 1782 in Donnington, Sussex. Mary Ann Reynolds was born three years later and was christened on 7 December 1785 in nearby Hunston, Sussex. Two more sons, John and Robert, were born in 1788 and 1790. Robert died just 3 weeks after his christening. In 1791, Thomas and Sarah had a daughter, who they named Sarah, after her mother. Two more daughters followed, Harriet in 1794 and Lucretia in 1798. Their eighth child, Francis was born in 1801 and lastly another son, James, was born in 1809. James did not survive, he died just eleven days after he was christened on 23 April 1809.
Mary Ann Reynolds was married in about 1810 in Chichester, Sussex. She and her husband Robert Spiller were living in London when their first seven children were born. They had returned to Chichester, Sussex by the time their eighth child, Charlotte, arrived in 1828. In 1839, Robert, Mary Ann and four of their children left England for the newly established colony of South Australia.

Sarah Reynolds married on the 11 December 1813 at the Parish Church of St Peter-the-less in Chichester, Sussex. Her husband, George Bramsden, was a miller. They had five children, Jane, Edward, Sarah, Lucy Louisa and William Meredith.
John Reynolds married Mary Matilda Dennett on 7 March 1816 in Mid Lavant, Sussex. John was employed as a carpenter. He and Mary had a family of eight sons and three daughters. Their eldest daughter Eliza also left England in 1839 on the ship John which arrived in Port Adelaide on 4 February 1840. Eliza married Robert Walker Cleland on 4 September 1841 at Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide, South Australia. Francis Reynolds was married on 25 May 1826 in Funtington, Sussex. He married Sarah Harvey from Aldingbourne, Sussex. Francis and Sarah had a family of seven sons. Francis worked as a gardener for most of his working life. |
Sarah Reynolds died in September 1828 in Hunston, Sussex at the age of 65 years. She was buried on 9 September 1828 in Hunston, Sussex. Thomas lived with his youngest daughter, Lucretia until his death on 30 October 1842 in Hunston, Sussex at the age of 85 years. Before his death, Thomas was working as a bridge keeper.
Lucretia Reynolds didn't marry until 1836 when she was about 38 years old. It doesn't appear that she and her husband, Charles Russell, had any children. In 1841, Charles and Lucretia were living in Hunston Common with Lucretia's father, Thomas Reynolds and Charles was employed as an agricultural labourer. By 1851, Lucretia's occupation was recorded as a School Mistress, whilst Charles was employed as a Canal Bridge Keeper. It is likely he took over the role of bridge keeper from his late father-in-law.
Lucretia Reynolds didn't marry until 1836 when she was about 38 years old. It doesn't appear that she and her husband, Charles Russell, had any children. In 1841, Charles and Lucretia were living in Hunston Common with Lucretia's father, Thomas Reynolds and Charles was employed as an agricultural labourer. By 1851, Lucretia's occupation was recorded as a School Mistress, whilst Charles was employed as a Canal Bridge Keeper. It is likely he took over the role of bridge keeper from his late father-in-law.

Mary Ann married Robert Spiller in 1810 in Chichester, Sussex. Robert was born on 17 March 1790 in St Marylebone, Middlesex and died on 13 May 1847 in Morphett Vale, South Australia at age 57 years. They had eight children: Sarah, Mary Ann, William, William Robert, John, Emanuel, Alfred and Charlotte.
- John Reynolds was born in about 1788 in Hunston, Sussex, was christened on 28 March 1788 in Hunston, Sussex and died on 28 March 1860 in Hunston, Sussex at age 72 years. John married Mary Matilda Dennett on 7 March 1815 in Mid Lavant, Sussex. Mary was born in about 1796 in Chichester, Sussex and died on 11 September 1869 at age 73 years. They had eleven children: John, Thomas, George Francis, Eliza, Edmund, Francis, Mary. Alfred, Frances, Henry Dennett and William James.
- Robert Reynolds was born in 1790 in Hunston, Sussex, was christened on 23 May 1790 in Hunston, Sussex and died in June 1790 in Hunston, Sussex as an infant. He was buried on 17 June 1790 in Hunston, Sussex.
