Winkler Generations
Richard Albert (Dick) Winkler was born on either 27 August 1891 or 3 September 1891 in Wallaroo, South Australia. [His birth certificate states the 3 September but his family always celebrated his birthday on 27 August] He was baptised on 6 August 1896 at Wallaroo by his grandparents, William and Elizabeth Jane Hicks . Dick married 17-year-old Annie Frances Ruby Bitters at the Congregational Church Manse in Kadina, South Australia on 6 January 1912. Dick was 20 years old.
Dick and Annie lived at Kadina and Wallaroo for the first six years of their marriage but by 1920, had moved to Adelaide and were living in Wakefield street, Kent Town. At this time, they had five young children of their own and were also looking after Dick’s youngest siblings, Perce and Violet.

Sadly, Annie died seven years later. It is believed her death was the result of an attempted abortion. She was only 33 years old. Annie was buried in the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, on 1 September 1927. Dick was left to bring up the five children on his own; Dulcie was almost 15, Alma was 13, William was 11, Richard was 9 and Gwendoline was not yet 7 years old.
On 7 July 1935, Dulcie Winkler married Allen Hector Wyman, they had three children: Dawn, Maxine and Robert Allen.
Two years later, Dick was cycling on Henley Beach road, Mile End towards Adelaide and was just approaching the Bakewell Bridge, when he was hit by a tram. As a result of the accident, Dick sustained a compound fracture of his skull and was taken to the Adelaide Hospital in a serious condition. It took some time for him to recover and go back to work. Dick was employed as a labourer for most of his working life.
On 13 April 1940, Alma Winkler married Andrew John Bramley at Croydon, South Australia. They had two children: Douglas and Graham. Gwendoline Winkler married Gerald Lester Hardy Pine on 25 May 1942 in Woodville, South Australia. They had two children: Gerald Dodswell and Diane Frances. William enlisted in the Australian Army on 8 March 1943 and served in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. A year after he was discharged, William Winkler married Joyce Emily Biddle, on 4 October 1947 in Pirie street, Adelaide.
Dick Winkler died on 29 March 1968 at Glenside Hospital from bronchopneumonia and heart disease, He was 76 years old. Dick was buried in the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, on 1 April 1968.

Joyce was born on 22 February 1915 in Yankalilla, South Australia and died on 31 October 2008 in Victor Harbor, South Australia at age 93 years. They had a daughter: Janice.
