Hazel Christabel McKenzie, the daughter of John Cail McKenzie and Lena Annie Bales, was born on 27 September 1903 in Broken Hill, New South Wales. When Hazel was about five years old the McKenzie family returned to Hawker, South Australia. John Cail McKenzie and Lena Annie Bales had met and married in Hawker fourteen years earlier.
Hazel trained as a nurse when she left school. In about 1927 she was nursing at the Adelaide hospital when she met a young Joe McAllister. Hazel married Joseph Edward McAllister, son of Joseph McAllister and Ethel Margaret Mason, on 30 January 1929 in Adelaide, South Australia. They had four children: Raymond Edward, Donald John, Joan and Joyce. Donald died at the Estcourt House Children's Hospital in North Adelaide, South Australia when he was four years and nine months old. Donald suffered acute appendicitis, acute tonsillitis and abscesses and most likely was afflicted with Spina Bifida from birth.
