George Ward was born in about March 1841 in Great Chart, Kent, son of George Ward and Susan Foster. George was christened on 11 April 1841 in Great Chart Kent. George appears in the 1841 census aged 3 months, living with his parents in The Street, Great Chart, Kent. In 1851 George was 10 years old and attending school. By 1861 George was working as an agricultural labourer and still living at home with his parents.
On 25 April 1868, George married 20-year-old Caroline Jell, the daughter of Alfred Jell and Jane Oliver. Caroline was born in about June 1848 in West Ashford district, Kent, the eldest of six children. By 1871, George was working as a labourer in an engine factory, supporting his wife and two children, Harry aged 3 and Clara aged 1. They were living in Chart street, Great Chart.

George and Caroline had another three children, Frank born in 1872, Flora in 1874 and Arthur in 1876. Soon after the birth of Arthur, Caroline Ward passed away at the age of 28 years. George was remarried before the end of 1876 to Mary Hart of Woodchurch, Kent. Mary had an 8-year-old daughter, Winifred and was the seventh child of George Hart and Sarah Bridger. Mary was christened on 19 February 1843 in Woodchurch, Kent.
In 1881 George was working as a railway labourer. He and Mary were living in Chart street, Great Chart with 13-year-old Harry, 11-year-old Clara, 7-year-old Flora and 8-year-old Frank. Mary’s daughter Winifred Hart was living with the, as well as 7-month-old Kate, the eldest of three daughters born to George and Mary. Alice Ward was born in 1882 and Beatrice the following year. |
George was still working as a railway labourer in 1891 at the South Eastern Railways Works. His sons Harry and Frank were also working for the South Eastern Railways as Wagon Coach builders. Mary was at home, 34 Lower Denmark road, Ashford, Kent, with the three youngest children, Kate, Alice and Beatrice. Clara Ward was living with her uncle, widower, George Jell in 1891. They eventually married 10 years later and had five children together.
Arthur Ward was living with his grandparents Alfred and Jane Jell in 1891. Alfred and Jane Jell were also raising two other grandsons, Alfred and Henry Victor. Alfred was the son of James Jell and Betsy Brenchley. Betsy had died when Alfred was just two years old. Victor was the son of Ellen Jell.
By 1901 all of the children had left home and George and Mary were living at 27 Beaver road in Ashford, Kent. George was still working on the railways as a labourer. George later became a day watchman at the railway works and in 1911 he and Mary were still living at 27 Beaver road, Ashford, Kent. George Ward died in about March 1913 in West Ashford district, Kent at the age of 72 years. Mary survived him by five years, she died in about December 1918 in West Ashford district, Kent at age 76 years. |

Mary was born in December quarter 1842 in Woodchurch, Kent, was christened on 19 February 1843 in Woodchurch, Kent and died in December quarter 1918 in West Ashford district, Kent at age 76. They had three daughters: Kate, Alice and Beatrice. Mary also had a daughter, Winifred from a previous relationship.

They had five children: Ethel Maud, Charles George, Percy Frank, Elsie Doris Annie and Alfred Reginald Victor. George Jell had a daughter, Ellen Jane from his first marriage to Harriett Hodgkin.

Frank married Martha Jane Wooderson on 19 December 1897 in West Ashford, Kent. They had six children: William Frank, Alice Elizabeth, Gladys May, Edith, George Drury and Frederick.
