Winkler Generations
Frederick Winkler was born on 13 January 1900 in Wallaroo, South Australia, the fifth child of Charles William Winkler and Elizabeth Jane Hicks.
According to his daughter Peggy, Fred was always in trouble as a youngster. He didn’t want to stay at school, so eventually he was sent to the Catholic School in Wallaroo. It didn't make any difference, he would go in the front door and then straight out the back. So, it probably came as no surprise when Fred enlisted in the Australian Army on 9 August 1915, when he was just 15 years and 7 months old. Fred told them his name was Edward and that he was 18 years and 7 months old. He was a strapping lad of 5 foot 7 inches, so the authorities didn’t question his age. Fred embarked for overseas service on board RMS Mongolia on 9 March 1916 with the 10th Battalion. It didn’t take long for the authorities overseas to find out that Fred was under age. He was soon transferred to the Australian General Hospital in Rouen, France and placed on staff until they were able to return him to Australia. |
Fred had suffered from rheumatic fever when he was younger and once in the battle field, he had started developing heart and breathing issues. He was returned to Australia on 4 March 1918 and discharged as medically unfit, after having served for almost 3 years, 2 of them overseas. Fred arrived back in Wallaroo four days later and received a public welcome home at the Wallaroo Institute, along with two other returned soldiers.
The following year, Fred married 16-year-old Myrtle Lucy Emma Wilkes at the West Adelaide Methodist Church on 3 July 1919. Fred was 19 years old. Fred and Myrtle had three son, the eldest Alexander Fleurs was born in Hackney on Christmas Day, 1919; Frederick William Harvey Winkler was born in 1921 in Southwark and Laurence Charles Winkler was born in 1925 in Hilton.
Two years later Fred and Myrtle were divorced. Myrtle remarried on 4 August 1928 to Hugh Francis Riley. The three boys were to later take the surname of their step-father.
Fred married Mary Gertrude Goorty on 15 September 1928, Mary, the daughter of James and Elizabeth Marie Goorty, was 23 years old. Fred and Mary had four daughters, Dorothy Peggy in 1929, Margaret Rose in 1941, Kathleen Elizabeth in 1942 and Christine Mary born in 1947, and one son, Frederick George, born in 1938.

Fred, known as Ginger because of his red hair, developed diabetes in his later years which caused neuropathy (loss of feeling) in his feet. His brother, Perce used to joke about the time Fred was sitting by the fire and his toe caught alight.
