From Devon to South Australia
Elizabeth Esther Bales (also known as Eliza Hester) married William Henry Edwards (Harry) on 15 June 1865 at Holy Trinity Church in Adelaide, South Australia. William was born about 1841 and died on 13 January 1927 aged about 86.
Harry and Eliza Edwards lived in the Tea Tree Gully area for about five years after their marriage. They had four of their ten children before they decided to move to Darwin, Northern Territory in about 1870. They built and operated a hotel at Palmerston for a number of years. Four more children were born in Palmerston. In about 1876 they returned to Adelaide where two more children were born. Harry built a house in George Street, Norwood. He then decided to go to England on holiday and bought his sister, Margaret, with him when he returned. From 1878 to 1882 Harry and Eliza kept the Tea Tree Gully Hotel in Tea Tree Gully, South Australia before moving to Athelstone, South Australia where they were fruit growers. |
Harry took the lease of the Maryatville Hotel in Maryatville, South Australia in 1884. Some time later he decided to go gold prospecting in Victoria. He was mildly successful in his endeavours and when he returned to South Australia he went into business as a stockbroker. He was able to amass a fortune of about £25,000 and was advised to retire. However Harry remained in business until his fortune had declined considerably.
Henry Edwards was the proprietor of the hotel at the time of this photograph. A man and a small child are standing in the doorway to the hotel. This is possibly Mr Edwards and his daughter.

Of those who survived to adulthood she says, Charlie died in Perth aged about 27 years and Harriet died in Coolgardie, Western Australia aged about 28 years. She mentions the names of the other members of the family as Alf, Annie, Eva and Nellie. Was Charles Henry Edwards "Charlie" or was his brother Charles Palmerston Edwards "Charlie.
