Ettie married Reginald Frank Ewart Lihou on 23 February 1924 at St. Cuthberts Church, Prospect. Rex was 28 and Ettie was 25 years old. Rex was the youngest child of Stephen Martin Lihou and Margaret Harry. Stephen Lihou was well-known in the northern districts of South Australia where he operated a cordial manufacturing business. In 1880 he opened a branch at Terowie, where the Lihou family lived until 1900 when Stephen transferred his operations to Broken Hill, New South Wales.
In 1916, the Lihou family returned to South Australia, Margaret Lihou was the licensee of the Queen’s Arms Hotel in Wright street, Adelaide for seven years before her death on 12 May 1930. Stephen Lihou died just three months later on 9 August 1930. |
Rex and Ettie Lihou had moved to Semaphore by 1939 and were running a small shop and boarding house on Semaphore road adjacent to the Federal Hotel. Ettie’s niece, Roma, remembered riding her bike from Glenelg to Semaphore with her dad, Perce, to visit Ettie. Roma vividly remembered all the lolly jars lined up along the shop counter.
Rex and Ettie separated a few years later and Ettie sued for divorce, which was granted on 17 June 1943. A year later she married Frank Rutherford South, a widower, and father of two grown children. Frank’s wife Olive had died in 1942. Ettie and Frank married at Semaphore on 31 July 1944. Frank was the licensee of the Lord Exmouth Hotel at Exeter, South Australia at that time.
In 1949 Ettie, sold the shop and boarding house. Her father, Charlie Winkler had been living with Ettie at Semaphore. Eventually Ettie and Frank, together with Charlie, moved to a house in Blackwood in the Adelaide foothills. Charlie’s eyesight began to fail and eventually Ettie, no longer able to care for him, arranged for Charlie to move to a nursing home in North Adelaide. |
