The Hussey's of Dorset
George Edward Hussey was born in about 1752 in Dorset, England. On 20 March 1781 George enlisted in the Militia in Wimborne Minster, Dorset. He gave his age as 25 years at that time. The Militia were the principal military reserve forces in Great Britain during the 18th century. Men were chosen by ballot among the able-bodied men of the parish between the age of 18 and 50. They would serve for three to five years. If they chose not to serve, they either provided a substitute or paid a fine. Although overseas service was excluded from the militia's duties, regiments were usually required to serve away from their home counties.
On the 14 July 1784, George married Mary Ann Davis in Mere, Wiltshire. Perhaps he had been serving with the militia in Wiltshire when he met Mary Ann.
George and Mary Ann had a daughter about a year after their marriage, they named her Mary Ann after her mother. Two more daughters followed, Elizabeth and Sarah. However, it is likely that Elizabeth died as a child, as she is not mentioned in the Will of George Edward Hussey, dated 27 May 1825. Five more children were born between 1791 and 1805, Thomas, Eliza, George Edward, Richard and Charles Gigger. |
Mary Ann Hussey died in about June 1822 in Kingston, Dorset at the age of 63 years. She was buried in Wimborne Minster, Dorset on 12 June 1822.
George Hussey made his will shortly after the death of his wife. A great portion of the text contained in the will is illegible and only a partial transcription has been completed. From the information so far gathered from the will, it can be surmised that from the marriage of George Edward and Mary Ann Hussey on or about the tenth of July 1784 [14 July 1784], there was issue of seven children, namely – Mary Ann, Thomas, George Edward, Eliza, Richard James, Charles Gigger & Sarah; that George Edward Hussey was a gentleman and landholder in Kingston, Dorset, his wife Mary Ann was deceased before 27 May 1825 and that the sole executor of his Will was Robert Page, surveyor, of Wimborne Minster, Dorset. George Edward Hussey died in February 1826 in Wimborne Minster, Dorset at the age of 74 years. He was buried on 18 February 1826 in Wimborne Minster, Dorset. His will was proved at Court in London on 7 July 1826. |
